Advanced Driver Assistance System for Interurban Environments: Environmental Perception and Simulation

The ADAS ROAD-EYE project (2014–2016) was a Spanish research initiative, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (TRA2013-48314-C3-1-R), co-led by Carlos III University of Madrid and the Polytechnic University of Madrid, designed to improve active road safety on conventional interurban roads. Its main objective was to reduce accidents on secondary roads and at roundabouts—environments that are more complex and less regulated than highways—by developing technologies capable of anticipating risky situations and collisions.

To achieve this, the research combined advanced computer vision (stereo cameras to detect lanes and road markings), cooperative V2X (vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure) communications, and virtual simulation environments. The project’s success lay in the on-track validation of accident-prevention modules at intersections and the creation of real-time self-calibration algorithms, laying the technological groundwork for the development of autonomous driving in Spain.
