From CAOS to Optimization: Artificial Intelligence with Real Impact

About Us

The Control, Learning, and System Optimization Laboratory (CAOS) is a cutting-edge research group within the Department of Computer Science at Carlos III University of Madrid (UC3M), founded in 2004 and formerly part of the Scalab group. Our mission is to transform algorithmic research into tangible solutions. Through the advanced use of artificial intelligence and data analysis, we solve complex problems for industry and society, improving decision-making, safety, and operational efficiency.

Our work focuses on artificial intelligence, machine learning, data analysis, predictive control, optimization, artificial neural networks, pattern recognition, evolutionary computing, agent-based modeling, and time series forecasting. One of the CAOS group’s strengths is its practical focus and its ability to transfer knowledge to the private sector. It has developed Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) for urban environments, creating software based on classifier ensembles for the efficient, real-time identification of traffic signals.

Research

Machine Learning and Predictive Models: We design advanced architectures and systems based on multiple classifiers (ensembles) to anticipate trends and extract useful insights from large volumes of business and industrial data.

Computer Vision and Smart Mobility: We develop Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Our software enables vehicles to understand their surroundings in real time, ranging from the detection of pedestrians and infrastructure to the monitoring of the driver’s condition.

Planning and Optimization: We create autonomous algorithms that decide “what to do and when to do it.” We automate logistics, calculate optimal sequences, and enable replanning in milliseconds in response to unforeseen events in dynamic environments.
