System for the Automation of Public and Shared Transportation Vehicles Designed for Semi-Structured Environments

The project “System for the Automation of Public and Shared Transportation Vehicles in Semi-Structured Environments: Analysis and Interpretation of the Environment” is an R&D&I initiative funded by the Spanish Government’s State Research Agency (AEI), as part of the funding program for “Proof of Concept” projects. Led by researchers at Carlos III University of Madrid (UC3M), this project aims to advance the autonomous and connected operation of buses and shuttle services within controlled or predictable areas such as university campuses and industrial complexes.

From a technical standpoint, the system focuses on processing, analyzing, and interpreting the environment using an advanced artificial perception architecture. This is achieved through sensor fusion (such as LiDAR devices and machine vision cameras) and the application of artificial intelligence and deep learning models. These tools enable precise vehicle localization, semantic road segmentation, and real-time tracking of both static and dynamic obstacles to ensure safe operations.
