Advanced Perception for Autonomous Vehicles

The PEAVAUTO project (Advanced Perception for Autonomous Vehicles) (PEAVAUTO-CM-UC3M – 2020/00036/001) is a research initiative led by the Carlos III University of Madrid (UC3M) and developed between 2020 and 2022. This research was funded by the Regional Ministry of Education and Research of the Community of Madrid through its excellence grants. Its main objective was to optimize the safety and efficiency of autonomous driving by improving the vehicle’s perception module, combining the expert work of the university’s Computer Science and Systems Engineering and Automation departments.

From a technical standpoint, the project focused on developing artificial intelligence algorithms for multimodal sensor fusion, integrating real-time data from vision cameras and LiDAR systems to generate precise three-dimensional replicas of the environment. It also implemented advanced multi-camera systems to eliminate blind spots by unifying fields of view and applied 3D domain adaptation techniques. These methodologies allow theoretical models to successfully adjust to real-world conditions, such as unforeseen weather or lighting variations during circulation.
