Agent-Based Intelligent Driver Decision Support System

The i-Support project (2012–2015) was a Spanish research initiative funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation (TRA2011-29454-C03-03), carried out jointly by Carlos III University of Madrid, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and the Computer Vision Center. The project served as the decision-making core within the coordinated eCo-DRIVERS program, a consortium designed to improve safety in urban electric vehicles through three interconnected subprojects. While the first two subprojects focused on the perceptual aspect—using computer vision to monitor the urban environment and in-vehicle cameras to detect driver distractions and fatigue—i-Support functioned as the “brain” of the system, fusing all these data streams in real time to assess road risks in an integrated manner.

Its technological approach differed from that of conventional assistants in that it was based on the paradigm of intelligent agents and evolutionary classification systems, designed specifically to reason in environments characterized by high uncertainty and incomplete data, thereby laying crucial methodological foundations for the evolution of today’s ADAS.
