Remote Monitoring and Control Center: Enriched Information from the Infrastructure, GECOVA.
The project “Remote Monitoring and Control Center: Enriched Information from the Infrastructure” (GECOVA), reference number PDC2025-165871-C32, is a national research initiative funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation. It is scheduled to be carried out between the years 2025 and 2027, with the participation of Carlos III University of Madrid, the Polytechnic University of Madrid, and the European University of Madrid. The project is led by Araceli Sanchis de Miguel, and it focuses on developing new solutions for the remote monitoring and control of smart vehicles through the use of advanced data from the infrastructure.
GECOVA’s main objective is to design a remote monitoring and control center capable of integrating, processing, and presenting enriched information about the traffic environment. To achieve this, data collected by the vehicles themselves will be combined with information from cameras, sensors, communication systems, and other devices installed in the road infrastructure. This expanded view will improve understanding of traffic conditions and facilitate decision-making in complex scenarios, especially when a single vehicle’s perception is limited or insufficient.
From a technical standpoint, the project will focus on developing advanced tools for data fusion, incident detection, environmental mapping, and assistance to remote operators. The control center must identify risk situations, obstacles, anomalous behavior, or significant changes in traffic flow, providing clear, reliable, and contextualized information. Additionally, the project will investigate communication mechanisms between vehicles, infrastructure, and operators that enable safe and efficient intervention when necessary, with a particular focus on latency, communication robustness, and the reliability of the transmitted information.
