Artificial Intelligence at the CAOS Group goes beyond theory. We focus on developing systems capable of perceiving, reasoning, and acting in complex and dynamic environments. Since our inception, we have applied AI to solve real-world problems, transforming raw data into automated strategic decisions and automating critical services for the business sector. Examples include perception and driver-assistance systems, logistics and route optimization, and problem-solving through knowledge search and representation.

Laboratory Milestones

Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection: Designing algorithms capable of identifying vulnerable road users in real time. To this end, research is being conducted on how to combine data from different sensors, such as optical cameras and laser/LiDAR, to maintain accuracy at night or in rainy conditions.

Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR): Optimization of neural network architectures and ensembles (sets of classifiers) so that the system can “read” traffic signs at high speeds, adapting to sudden changes in lighting or partially obscured signs.

Driver Monitoring: Analysis of the driver’s condition using computer vision to detect fatigue, distractions, or drowsiness, issuing an alert before an accident occurs. This initiative is of vital importance in reducing the harmful effects of drowsiness on the road, which affect thousands of passengers and drivers worldwide.

Strategic Consortia: Our group has been a key player in programs run by the Community of Madrid, such as SEGVAUTO (Automotive Vehicle Safety), a large-scale project that brings together several universities and institutions to develop safe and autonomous mobility technologies, and the IA4MOV* network.
