Assistance System for Safer Urban Driving.

The URBANITAS project (TRA2015-63708-R) is a research initiative developed by Carlos III University of Madrid (UC3M) that was funded by the Government of Spain through the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Enterprise (with support from the State Research Agency’s CICYT project program). With a budget of 121,000 euros and a duration of three years, this project was specifically designed to mitigate collisions and proactively protect the most vulnerable users of urban roads, such as pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.

From a technical perspective, the system integrates advanced environmental perception and sensor fusion technologies strategically distributed throughout the vehicle. Its software architecture processes data in real time using cognitive models and artificial intelligence algorithms (deep learning) to continuously monitor the path ahead and eliminate the vehicle’s blind spots. Thanks to simulation environments and human factors analysis, the platform is capable of predicting risky maneuvers on complex streets and autonomously activating braking or evasive maneuvers when the system detects an imminent collision.
