SurgeryAI-Models: Integrating Digital Tools and AI into the Surgical Value Chain.

The SurgeryAI-Models project is funded by the European Union through NextGenerationEU funds and by Spain’s Ministry of Science and Innovation, under the call for strategic projects for ecological and digital transition (TED2021-130944B-C21). Led by Carlos III University of Madrid, this advanced research initiative is primarily focused on the digital transformation of neurosurgery, integrating artificial intelligence solutions into every link of the surgical value chain to optimize clinical decision-making and improve patient safety.

From a technical standpoint, the project employs deep learning models and convolutional neural networks specialized in the spatial and temporal analysis of video for the automatic detection of surgical phases and the proactive identification of anatomical structures in real time within the operating room. Furthermore, the technical architecture extends to the postoperative phase through mobile health tools and electronic patient-reported outcome measures (ePROMs), where predictive analytics algorithms process data reported by the patient from home to anticipate complications and prevent emergency readmissions.
