Set of Classifiers for Intelligent Traffic Signal Processing

MCTIS is a research project developed in 2007 by the Department of Computer Science at Carlos III University of Madrid, designed to improve road safety through the automatic detection and classification of traffic signs (especially prohibition signs) for intelligent vehicles. The core of its innovation lies in the use of an ensemble of classifiers, a method that, instead of using a single complex model, combines multiple small, specialized neural networks that operate in a binary manner (analyzing whether the sign belongs to a specific type or not) to reach a joint final decision. Funded by the Community of Madrid (CCG06-UC3M/TIC-0766), this project laid the technological groundwork in the field of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) by demonstrating that the cooperation of simple mathematical models offers greater speed and accuracy than traditional large-scale architectures.
