Smart Traffic Monitoring Infrastructure for Mobility Management: Analysis and Interpretation of the Environment, INFRA4MOV
The project “Smart Traffic Monitoring Infrastructure for Mobility Management: Analysis and Interpretation of the Environment” (INFRA4MOV), reference number PDC2022-133684-C31, is a national research initiative funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation and the State Research Agency (AEI). It was carried out between December 1, 2023, through November 30, 2024, with the participation of Carlos III University of Madrid, the Polytechnic University of Madrid, and the European University of Madrid. The project focused on developing technological solutions based on smart infrastructure to improve traffic monitoring and mobility management.
The main objective of INFRA4MOV was to advance the development of systems capable of automatically analyzing and interpreting the road environment based on information obtained from sensors and devices installed in the infrastructure. This approach complements vehicle perception and provides a broader and more accurate view of traffic conditions. The information generated can be used to identify traffic congestion, incidents, obstacles, anomalous behavior, and other events relevant to traffic safety and efficiency.
From a technical standpoint, the project focused on developing advanced algorithms for computer vision, perception, data fusion, and artificial intelligence to detect, classify, and track the various elements present in mobility scenarios. The combined analysis of information from cameras, sensors, and connected systems made it possible to construct enriched representations of the environment, including the position and movement of vehicles, pedestrians, and other road users. Special attention was also paid to the robustness of the systems, data quality, and the ability to operate under various traffic and visibility conditions.
